Discover Applied Alternative/Renewable Energies
The 2007 Summer Environmental Academy will be held July 16-20, 2006
at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
What is the WERC Academy?
An experience in scientific environmental discovery, designed to
provide student and teacher opportunities to conduct educational
investigations. Teams will participate with scientific mentors in
a variety of activities to increase environmental awareness through
hands-on research.
Who Attends?
The WERC Environmental Academy is directed at middle and high school
teachers and high school students entering grades 9-12 during the
2007/2008 school year. Program activities will support approximately 30
participants; striving for an even ratio of students to teachers.
Academy sponsor, El Paso Electric is offering a limited number of
scholarships for eligible participants residing in the Paso del Norte
service region of New Mexico.
What will you experience?
 Teacher-student
teams will participate in an 8am to 5pm day-camp format with mentors
from WERC, industry and government agencies in field trips, lab
activities and guided studies addressing applied alternative and
renewable energies such as Water Resources, Wind Power,
Bio-Fuels and Solar Energy.
Renewable Energy is energy from a source that can be maintained in a
constant supply over time. Five main renewable energy sources exist:
water, sun, wind, biomass, and energy from within the earth. Since the
beginning of time, renewable resources have provided warmth, movement,
light; in short energy for life. From early sailing ships to high
production wind farms; from ancient civilizations to future generations,
solar, wind, water, and biomass have been primary sources of meeting our
everyday needs. With a growing shortage of fossil-fuel based energy and
advancements in technology, the integration of renewable energy poses
real opportunities and real challenges for today and for our future.

Why Participate?
Teachers develop environmental teaching skills and
network with state and national scientific professionals.
High School Students experience involvement in real
world issues and gain opportunities to formulate their college and
future career path.
What is Provided:
The Academy will provide lunches and refreshments, activity travel
and materials for all student and teacher participants. Teachers will
receive instructional materials upon completion of the academy.
Program Registration Fees:
- $100: Teacher single registration;
- $050: Student single
registration;
- $100: Teacher/student team.
Program Scholarships:
 El
Paso Electric is supporting up to 30 scholarships for eligible
participants residing in the Paso del Norte service region of New
Mexico. This support will cover full registration fees for the
Academy. Your application and pre-paid registration fees are required to
hold your spot. Scholarship recipients will be notified of their
selection immediately after the registration deadline and scholarships
will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
Deadline for registration and fees is June 1, 2007.
Registration fees are refundable for cancellations
made in writing prior to June 29, 2007. No refunds will be given
after this date.
In the case of program cancellation, all fees will be returned to
individuals and schools.
Academy History:
The WERC Summer Academy has a highly successful 16-year history. Some
recent programs include:
- The Historical/Cultural Environment, Taos, NM
- Water Quality in the Rio Ruidoso Watershed, Ruidoso, NM
- Watershed Sustainability Study in the Gila National Forest,
Silver City, NM.
- Cerro Grande Fire Rehabilitation Project (CGRP), Los Alamos, NM.
- Long-Term Environmental Stewardship of the Nuclear Waste Legacy
with Sandia National Laboratory, Albuquerque, NM.
